I bought this camera as an upgrade from the F60. After a week's use, all I can say is that I'm loving it. I don't have any experience with other Nikon models, but I do know that this camera was not intended for professionals, so I didn't really expect really high-end features. The beauty of the camera also depends on the style and needs of the photographer. For me, this is the perfect fit.
The thing is, it's really better than my previous camera. It had easier access to the dial and other buttons, bigger lcd, DOF preview, and 2.5 fps film advance, auto-bracketing, multi-exposure.
I just wish it could have added more weight to the body. The built-in flash is also annoying. It's set to default, so I'd have to turn it off everytime.
Overall, this is the best camera for beginners who are cost-conscious.
Strength
Easy access to controls
DOF Preview
2.5 fps Film Advance
Auto-bracketing
Multi-exposure
Weakness
Too light-weight
Automatic Pop-up Flash

Summary
I first bought this camera when i sold off my Minolta 505si. I was attracted to this model because of the pre-programmed mode that is idiot-proof. Besides, it is my first 'Nikon' camera at an affordable price. I decided to buy Nikon over Canon EOS 300 because of its metal mount. I thought this F65 was going to be with me for long but over the last 6 months, i have purchased a secondhand F90x and F70 as i have quickly outgrown my F65.
Strength
I love the light weight which makes it easy when i have to run after my toddler to 'capture the moment'. Besides, it is also handy when we go out for field trips since i just attach a lightweight 50mm f1.8 lens to the body. Perfect combination!!!!!!! Most of all, i love the infra red remote control. It enables me to take photo of myself and my family during holiday trips or birthday parties. Indeed a real plus point!!!
Weakness
I find that the focussing speed is not fast enough..well, at least not as fast as my son who runs away from the camera!!! :( I feel that the photos taken with my F70 is better than the F65..using the same lens. The most irritating thing is the little assist light that helps in focussing under low light situation. I ended up blinding my son or my hubby even before i could snap....i just sold my F65 3 days ago.

Summary
Overall, the N65 is a great advanced casual beginner camera. It's lightweight, full of features, and is priced very reasonably.
Strength
All of the features, like different flash modes, outdoor, macro, portrait, landscape, and evening picture features. Great Weather camera
Weakness
Auto-focus is a little noisy and a bit slow. It sometimes has trouble focusing at a small object in the viewfinder. Sometimes I needed to go into manual focus.

Summary
This is a good news/bad news camera, but overall, I am fairly impressed. Just returned from shooting hundreds of slides in Ecuador.
Strength
It's a great value at the price I paid, $140. It feel terrific in my fairly small hands, very easy to grip with one hand, and it's very light compared to our F100. It snaps with little vibration. It can be used by an eight year old in auto mode, while allowing considerable control for the professional. It feels sturdy. Exposures are amazingly well executed, even with slide film. Focusing without a spot meter isn't as problematic as I thought. I found I could generally trust the automatic focus, with maybe one shot per roll of 36 disappointing me. A Minolta Maxxum 5 that I tried out was far quicker and more accurate. My 70-300mm f3.5 lense took quite a while to roll into focus on the N65, but it did find its mark. If you have the time and patience to read the manual, it becomes apparent that a lot of options and flexibility is built in here.
Weakness
Won't meter with older Nikkor lenses. Fairly slow auto focus, but not a serious problem.
No mirror lock-up, although vibration is far less than with my old FE2, so I haven't really missed it yet.
