Summary

Nikon's TC-E3ED teleconvertor accessory lens screws into the front threads of Nikon's Coolpix lenses (with some exceptions and may require an adaptor, depending on the model). It multiplies the effective length by 3x. While this convertor can be used with once mounted on the camera, the user should select the appropriate category in the lens submenu. When installed, the viewfinder becomes unuseable. With my CP4500, the internal flash is turned off but the camera can still trigger an external flash. Unless the correct item is selected in the lens submenu, you will see severe vignetting. Effectively, you will get a 300 - 450mm lens. This leaves a gap between 155 (of the in camera lens) and 300 mm (in 35mm format). To remedy this, you'll need the TC-E2. In reality you are getting a super telephoto lens for your Coolpix camera without a lot of mass: you'll definately want a tripod or similar support to keep camera shake to a minimum. I haven't noticed much distortion, but truth be told, I haven't used it much. I am, however very happy with the image quality. This convertor lens also has Nikon's ED glas elements. Closest focusing is about 8 feet. If you need to get closer, it has been recommended to try the Macro (Close up) mode. The convertor lens has a 72mm filter diameter should you be inclined to use them. The convertor lens also makes the lens very front and right heavy and may move the swivel; Nikon wisely inluded a swivel lock on the CP4500 to keep this from happening. The convertor comes in a nice cloth pouch, front and rear lens caps and instruction booklet. Would I buy it again? YES! Would I recommend it as a "first" teleconvertor (ie. TC-E2 vs. TC-E3ED)? NO! Get the TC-E2 first and see if you need the additional focal length.

Weakness

- big and heavy - blocks the viewfinder on my CP4500 - not a good "first" choice teleconvertor lens get the TC-E2 first unless you know you need the TC-E3.
