Summary

This Philips video recorder is one of the latest generation with a built-in digital tuner, an update mandated by the FCC for all new models sold in the USA after March 1, 2007. It features a 160 Gbyte hard disk drive, direct recording and high-speed...

Strength

Digital tuner, HDD recording, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW recording and high-speed dubbing, 1080p upconversion

Weakness

Crippling copy-protection restrictions, lack of battery backup, no program guide or automatic naming

Bottom Line

Good value for the money, routine operation works well, but it would be a lot more useful without those imposed copy-protection restrictions.

Summary

This unit, purchased a couple of weeks ago, is the sixth ATSC DVD recorder I've owned in 2007. The first five went back; this one, at least so far, is a keeper. I get television strictly via over-the-air, as opposed to cable or satellite. My ATSC...

Strength

Hard drive provides chase play and 66 hours of programs in default record mode.

Weakness

Doesn't record or pass through high def, can't manually add channels.

Bottom Line

Hands down the best ATSC recorder I have tried and should do until stand alone high def recorders come out. Three hundred bucks well spent.

Summary

The Philips DVDR3575H is a DVD recorder and a 160 GB hard drive DVR in one unit offering 1080p upconvert capabilities and a digital/analog tuner. Background: I’ve stepped up to the DVDR3575H from an older Philips recorder, the DVDR75...

Strength

Digital tuner, DVR with no subscription, pause live TV, simultaneous record & playback, dubbing

Weakness

tedious titling, no timer titles, no DL

Bottom Line

Lots of features in this DVD/DVR device. The manual is actually decent. Great step up from just a plain DVD recorder.

Summary

UPDATE: I have now owned it for 10 weeks and have NO defects to report. I still have no complaints except, as mentioned originally, it is not an intuitive machine and the manual has to be kept close if you want to be innovative, change quality of...

Strength

Excellent recording capacity; easy to see menus on screen

Weakness

Small remote buttons; manual needs to be studied; no titling recording until it's completed

Bottom Line

Don't expect plug and play. Know your expectations prior to purchase. Be prepared to study. Have a tech savvy friend or patience with customer service if you're techphobic.

Summary

I did a lot of research (2-3 months) last spring before I found the dvdr I wanted. An HDD big enough and a DVD recorder to burn stuff. So I spent $300 and got the Phillips, a decent brand. The first month it worked beautifully. Everything was golden...

Strength

When it works, the product is awesome

Weakness

After the first 30 days, it stopped working and the customer service is horrible

Bottom Line

It seems extremely hit or miss to me, since the product bugs clearly are not resolved. So good luck if you're a gambler.
